In my installation of Winamp, the Nullsoft Studio has 17 different DSP (i.e., Digital Signal Processing) functions which can be individually loaded. The only one I can see which lets you slow down a recording is labeled: 'justin - simple pitch and tempo (half-2x) control'. It's a speed control, which means it changes tempo and pitch together. Open up the Winamp Preferences and the browse down to General Preferences Global Hotkeys. The first thing you should check is whether the “Enabled” hotkey is checked. If it’s not, then select that and most likely that will fix your issue. Slow Me Down - DSP plugin for Winamp 2 (freeware) This plugin lets you slow down or even speed up the music by stretching it between -50% to 100%. Without changing the pitch! You can also fine-tune the pitch in cents (100ths of a semi-tone) to suit your instrument. Note 1: No Winamp DSP plugin works when playing CD's, only when playing mp3, wave files etc. It adds playback speed control and a separate tip timer sound volume control. And SdPlayer is available for both Windows and Linux. Wplayer 1.00 works with WinAmp. Download the latest version of Winamp first (For Windows) and Download SHOUTcast DSP Plug-In.

I downloaded and tested it on a LibriVox file and it does work. Lotsof settings, but I just tried with the default. It doesn't change thepitch of the voice. It looks like you can even re-save the files inbatches after slowing them down. For Mac & Windows.

I have used, and loved, their freeware Winamp plugin. Though I didn'trealise I had such an old version of Winamp on the other computer. Iused it for slowing down music, but it would work okay on voices, Ithink, since you can tweak the pitch too if need be. An excellentchoice if the listener has an old computer (mine was on Win 98.) Icouldn't save the slowed file, but it was fine for listening on thespot, and can be easily turned off to listen at normal speed withoutlosing preferred settings (though those will vary by book anyway.)

Notice that, even though the Web page for this plugin says it 'onlyworks with Winamp 2' and 'does not work with Winamp 3 or higher', Ijust tested it with Winamp 5 (the latest major version) and it doeswork.
One change speed (tempo) and pitch independently. Speed can beregulated from 1/4 faster to 1/2 slower.
However, there were some imperfections. Occasionally, the sound wouldbe a bit garbled -- noticeable, but not real objectionable. Also, Itried it with a !LibriVox recording by a female reader. At all slowerspeeds, her voice sounded hollow like she was talking inside a box.
If you try it out, keep in mind there's a brief delay in betweenchanging the setting for speed or pitch and the software catching upand applying the change.

Known bugs and limitations[edit]
- Version 1.4.1 - 1.4.4 startup crashes(how to avoid);
- Supports only Winamp 2.0 compatible plugins;
- Doesn't support plugins with Pitch control and Speed control functionality;
- 192kHz files are not being played correctly (only up to 96kHz)

Sound quality issues[edit]
Due to difference in Foobar and Winamp architecture (Foobar has floating point audio chunks, while Winamp has fixed point ones), floating point to fixed point conversion (and vice versa) is necessary.
Conversion Bit-depth parameter can be set to:
- 16-bit: low quality, failsafe. Choose this setting, if you encounter a problem while playback;
- 24-bit: hi-quality;
- 32-bit: highest quality.
Foo_dsp_winamp converter has built-in limiter to avoid audio signal clipping. Limiter is non-bypassing (i.e. always on), so if you want to keep signal spectrum close to its original, you should use ReplayGain subsystem.

- For Foobar v0.9.6 and later: download the latest version of foo_dsp_winamp (1.4.5);
- For Foobar versions prior to 0.9.6: you can avoid startup crash by removing dsp_sps.dll from C:Program FilesWinampPlugins folder (it's a default path, check your winamp installation to find desired path). Than you can change 'Winamp plugins path' in foo_dsp_winamp settings and put dsp_sps.dll back to Plugins folder.
